RUGBY: McKeever’s Ballyclare progress with comfortable win over Ards

After trouncing Ards the previous week in a Qualifying League fixture, Ballyclare completed the double by whitewashing the former All Ireland League side 24-0 in the first round of the Junior Cup at The Cloughan.

Gary Clotworthy and Paul Robinson were the try scorers, with Robert Smith adding 14 points – four penalties and a conversion.

Ballyclareforged ahead on the half hour. Impressive scrum-half Tommy McGookin set up Clotworthy to score his fourth try in three matches. Smith goaled this one and then added a penalty to make it 10-0.

Visiting indiscretions were punished by three Smith penalties, before wing-forward Paul Robinson completed the scoring when he peeled off from a rolling maul and crossed for an unconverted touchdown.
