RUGBY: McKeever’s Ballyclare progress with comfortable win over Ards

After trouncing Ards the previous week in a Qualifying League fixture, Ballyclare completed the double by whitewashing the former All Ireland League side 24-0 in the first round of the Junior Cup at The Cloughan.

Gary Clotworthy and Paul Robinson were the try scorers, with Robert Smith adding 14 points – four penalties and a conversion.

Ballyclareforged ahead on the half hour. Impressive scrum-half Tommy McGookin set up Clotworthy to score his fourth try in three matches. Smith goaled this one and then added a penalty to make it 10-0.

Visiting indiscretions were punished by three Smith penalties, before wing-forward Paul Robinson completed the scoring when he peeled off from a rolling maul and crossed for an unconverted touchdown.

Coach Mike McKeever takes his side to Omagh this weekend in search of Qualifying 1 league points.

Man of the Match, sponsored by Mark McConnell, was Tommy McGookin. His performances at the base of the scrum have caught the eye as he stands in for Colin Morrow.
