Morrison ready for London 2012

RAPHOE badminton player Chloe Magee’s Olympics ended yesterday (Tuesday) after a narrow 2-1 games defeat to France’s Hongyan Pi.

Having won her first match on Sunday, Magee knew it was going to be tough task to reach the last 16 as the Chinese-born Pi won a bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships.

However the upset was on the cards when the 23-year-old claimed the first game winning 21-16, but Pi won the next two games (21-18 and 21-14) to win the match.

The North West’s involvement at London 2012 continues this weekend with Londonderry’s Aileen Morrison competing in the Women’s Triathlon on Saturday morning, while Finn Valley’s Tori Pena, whose grandmother is from the city, competes in the women’s pole vault event.

For Morrison, who was disappointed that her final race in Hamburg recently didn’t go according to plan, knows that on her day she can get a medal in London.

“Obviously I was a bit disappointed with the Hamburg race but I suppose I had a good swim which is always good for me and it should be similar conditions in London you would think,” she said.

“I could do 10 races over one season and half of them will be good races and in the other half I will think I could have done better, so for one day at the Olympics I need everything to go right for that to be my best race.

“To say I’m not capable of getting a medal would be a lie. I know I’m capable of competing with the best in the world.

“It’s not impossible, but that would be me having everything go right on the day and with a little bit of luck on my side and me being at my best; so we’ll see.

“Realistically a very good position for me would be top 10. I wouldn’t be too disappointed if I was top 15, but if I could finish top five that would blow my mind.”
