McCreedy wins Ulster title

Just when it seemed that the Alpha club may not boast of too many Ulster Under 17 Championship successes this season, up steps 16 year-old Jon McCreedy to notch the Boys Singles title and the boys doubles as well.

For good measure Caitlin Steele captured the girls doubles with Moya Ryan.

With none of the four seeded players in the boys singles from the Lisburn club the local players did the club proud from the outset with Conor Monteith losing out to the top seed Ben Gallagher-Lynch and Matthew Prentice coming close to taking a set off Ben O’Shea.

Chin Nam Soong pulled back from one set down to take the second from Des Duggan and Matthew Smith was next in on the act when he gave No2 seed James Flaherty some cause for concern as the Moyvane player narrowly took the first set of their opening round clash 21/18 and edged the second by the same score.

Enter Jon McCreedy to the stage and after ending the hopes of Whitehead’s Kyle Hutton 21/3 21/5 in round two McCreedy eased through to the semis with Flaherty still reeling from his clash with Smyth 21/7 21/2.

McCreedy’s next opponent was Des Duggan and he held his composure even as his opponent fought to take the match into a decider after the Alpha player took the opener 21/15. McCreedy, with a place in the final in his sights, saw off the challenge 21/19 and went on to lift the coveted title winning in straight sets 21/19 21/18.

Ben Gallgher-Lynch and Adam Mcallister were the top seeds in the doubles from Ballaghaderreen but they were never really able to get in to the final with McCreedy and Matthew Smyth always in control and taking the title 21/16 21/13.

The girls doubles title went to Alpha’s Caitlin Steele and Moya Ryan from Ennis. The top seeds met Clodagh Dunne and Rachael McNulty, the No2 seeds, in the final.
