John blazes a trail in Rathmore competition

PLAYING off 15, John Neely scored well on Saturday at Rathmore Golf Club to win the J O'Neill Cup (Fire Service) over the Valley links.

With a super back nine of one over par, including birdies at 13 and 16, he finished with a net 67, two clear of rugby legend, Derek Williamson.

From an eight handicap Derek posted a net 69. Frankie McDonald birdied the 15th and got his score down to 70, just a shot in front of Wesley Johnstone (16).

Wesley had an unfortunate eight at the 8th and a couple of double bogeys late on but held on to get into the prizes in fourth spot. Russell Dunlop birdied the ninth on his way to a gross score of 73. The competition standard scratch went up to 72, three above the par for the Valley links indicating the difficulty of the conditions.

80 members participated in this event, a good turnout and all proceeds from the competition go to the local Fire Service, a very worthy cause.

The next competition at Rathmore Golf Club is the G Wedlock Memorial Cup on Easter Sunday.
