Its Rovers for James

DESPITE huge interest from his favourite team Liverpool, Lisburn footballer James Knowles is hoping his big breakthrough in full-time football will come with Blackburn Rovers.

The 17-year-old opted to join Rovers ahead of a cluster of big clubs after his signature including the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

"I have been over and spent time with a lot of clubs but when I was with Blackburn it just felt right and when they offered me a contract I was very happy to stay with them," said Jason who only tuned 17 last month.

James has signed a one year scholarship and two year professional deal at Ewood Park and he is hoping next season will continue his rise up the ladder. "I have been on the Under-18's over there but towards the end of the season I got onto the Reserves squad. That is the big target for me now, to be pushing for a place on the reserves next season."

The former Largymore Primary and Fort Hill College pupil started playing with Lisburn Youth and when just 12-years-old was off to Portsmouth. "I really enjoyed going on that first trip and ever since I have really set my heart on playing full-time football. Because I support Liverpool it was nice to go there. They even brought me to the Champions League final in Athens two seasons ago. I enjoyed the training but there was just something about Liverpool that did not feel right. My dad John is a mad Everton fan and he would have loved for me to sign for them, I had been over about eight times with them and they were really were keen for me to sign. Through it all my dad has been a great help and influence to me."

James plays in midfield and importantly scores goals which gives him an edge in his position. He has played for Northern Ireland Under16's and had two seasons in the Victory Shield.

James was back home this week to meet family and friends after taking part in an end of season tour to Switzerland with the Blackburn Academy.
