High scores at Ballycastle Golf Club

THE cool but calm conditions resulted in another weekend of high scoring at Ballycastle Golf Club over the 16 holes.

On Saturday Tony Magee topped the scoring with 40 points in Section 2 followed closely by Barney McCahery on 39 and Martin Morgan on 38 points. In Section 1 it was even tighter with Eamonn McIlroy, Des Nevin and John Cullen all recording 38 points but countback decided that Eamonn won the turkey from Des and John.

On Sunday in Section 1, Liam Gallagher’s 23 points on the back nine was the deciding factor in pushing double winner Peter Dowds into second place after both players had scored 37 points.

In Section 2 Michal Dallat (Snr), who had been pipped the week before, made no mistake this time with an excellent 38 points just ahead of Austin Mullan with 37.

With just two weeks to go in the Turkey Season, the competition for the Ringers and Veteran prizes are really heating up.

In the Saturday Ringer Section 1, young Stuart Nevin has been leader since week one, but his nett total of 48.5 is coming under pressure from Colm Henderson on 49.5 and Francis McGinn on 50.5.

In Section 2 Francis Og McGinn leads on 51.0 from Rory Bonnar on 52.5 and Martin Morgan also on 52.5.

The Sunday Ringer Section 1 sees Peter Dowds way out in front with 45.0 with Mel Carleton on 50.5, his nearest challenger. Section 2 leader is Kevin Traynor on 49.5 with Liam Laverty a shot further back.

The Veterans Prize is proving to be a real dog fight with Martin Morgan and Liam McLaughlin on 176, just ahead of long time leader Michael Campbell on 175 and Liam Laverty hovering in the background with 171.
