Gymnastics event in the city

The International Northern European Gymnastics Championships will be held at the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex in Lisburn, on November 23 and 24, with competitors flying into Northern Ireland from the mainland, Finland and Norway.

Saturday November 23 will see the Men and Women’s All Around Competition and Sunday is the Men and Women’s Individual Apparatus Finals. Doors open at 9.30am.

Lisburn City Council and Sport Northern Ireland joined with Mr Tony Byrne from Salto Gymnastics Club in Lisburn to launch the competition; with local Lisburn gymnasts Emma Gorman and 14 year old Ewan McAteer.

The Chairman of Lisburn City Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, said: “With our year as European City of Sport now drawing to an end we are very pleased that this high-profile event is coming to Lisburn and we look forward to welcoming its competitors. We are delighted to be working with one of our long-time advocates for sport in Lisburn, Tony Byrne, from Salto Gymnastics Club, on this competition. Tony has worked diligently and highly successfully to raise the Club’s profile over the years and the championship organisers’ choice in Lisburn, will also raise Lisburn’s profile.

“I would like to thank Sport Northern Ireland for its significant financial contribution towards the Northern European Gymnastics Championships,” said Alderman Porter.

Sport Northern Ireland’s Chief Executive, Antoinette McKeown, welcomed the opportunity to showcase gymnastics on an international stage: “I am delighted that Sport Northern Ireland is supporting this event through our International Events Programme and I look forward to welcoming the international gymnastic teams to this region. This event allows us to showcase the high standard of our own gymnasts and their dedication to the sport.

“This event is what Sport Northern Ireland is all about,” Antoinette concluded.

400 tickets for each day will be on sale at Salto Gymnastics Club from Monday October 21. Ticket prices for both days are: Adult £7.00; Under 16 years £5; Family ticket (2 adults & 2 children) £20. The tickets will be on sale from Monday October 21 from Salto Gymnastics Club. T: 02892 607888.
