Marauding McKenna takes all

Eleven handicap Stephen McKenna shot a one under par first eight on Saturday to set the scene for a clear win in Portstewart’s Saturday Sweep.

He had dropped just one shot with his five at the difficult fifth before approaching the ninth. This was duly birdied, as was the tenth, to add seven points and take his halfway total to 22. After a purple patch like that a payback can be expected, number eleven produced that as Stephen dropped two there to go to one over par.

Consistent golf from twelve on gave up six pars and a bogey five at seventeen to put 18 additional points up and give Stephen his 40 point total, three clear of nearest rival David Ferguson on 37.

Also playing off eleven, David had an up and down round. A poor start saw the first double bogied while four and five took a shot apiece from him. Another was lost with a six at the seventh before a few steady pars were logged to get out of the opening eight with 17 points on the board. The roller coaster continued as shots fell away at twelve and thirteen before David scented more birdies.

The long fourteenth fell to a four, the short fifteenth to a two and sixteen to a three! You couldn’t blame David for taking a breather at seventeen, where no points were accrued, before finishing his day with another birdie three at the last. Twenty points resulted and his 37 overall gave him runners up slot by one point from Dennis McCrum on 36. W A one over par front eight had given Dennis 21 points; this included a two at the short sixth.

A few more bogies crept into his card on the way in and 15 points was all that could be gathered, possibly too much food at the ninth Dennis! Anyway, his 36 points got third spot for the day.
