Jim popular winner on President’s Day

It proved a mixed day at Silverwood on Saturday for one of the biggest competitions of the year in President’s Day.

The early starters had the worst of the weather with persistent rain all morning, and at one stage it looked as though the competition was going to be cancelled, but out of the blue the sun broke out and it was the later starters who got the best of the weather.

One who availed of this was popular match and handicap convenor Jim Doran.

Jim returned a great score of 42 points, he had a great start with eight straight pars and only one bogey at the 9th hole for a front nine of 22 points. His back nine included one birdie at the 17th hole, four pars and four bogeys for 20 points and his total of 42 points and everyone was delighted for this hard working club official to claim one of the big prizes.

In second place with 40 points was Sean Polin who had 19 points on the front nine with two pars, six bogeys and one double bogey. His back nine of 21 points included three pars at the 12th, 13th and 15th holes, five bogeys and one double bogey.

Third was Enda Brady with 39 points, he had 18 points on his front nine with two pars and the remainder being a mixture of bogeys and double bogeys. His back nine contained four pars, four bogeys and one no-score.

The gross prize was collected by scratch golfer Chris Watts with a two over gross.

Chris had a front nine of level par, with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. His back nine included seven pars and two bogeys for his total of 74.

Fourth place went to David Carville with 39 points. He had 22 points on his front nine, with one birdie, five pars, two bogeys and one double bogey. His back nine contained one birdie, one par, five bogeys and two double bogeys.

Fifth was Pat Curran, again with 39 points, he had 23 points on his front nine which included a two at the 2nd hole and 16 points on his back nine.

The second gross went to Sean McStay with a gross 76. Sean went round the front nine in two over par, with seven pars and two bogeys and his back nine was identical with seven pars and two bogeys.

The senior prize was won by Joe McAvoy with 36 points.

The first junior prize was won by Conor McCabrey with the best score of the day 43 points.

The second junior prize was collected by Darragh McCann with 40 points.

There was a third junior prize on the day kindly sponsored by the inform player of the club Fintan McAreavey and Eathan Headley was the winner with 37 points.

The front nine prize was won by Kevin Carson with 22 pts.

The back nine prize was won by Daryl Patton with 21pts

The visitors prize was picked up by Martin McAvoy with 38pts.

The golf club and president would like to thank everybody who were involved in organizing this event especially the golf and ski centre for an excellent buffet and the green staff for great work they have been doing over the past months and this showed again with the course in brilliant condition.
