Des nabs a sweep win at Rathmore

The League has a number of sponsors; I mentioned three of them last week and would acknowledge another generous trio this week in David Cameron, Liam Mullan’s Drains to Go and the Anvershiel Guesthouse. Their contributions make for a well supported and appreciated competition.

Des took a break from his starting duties at Royal Portrush to show off his prowess on the field of play and his impressive 19 points for the outward nine proved it was worth it. This included a no return for the fourth hole. A double bogey at ten was the only slip from Des as, with three holes out of play on the inward nine; he scored a creditable 13 for the remaining six for his 32 total.

One point back came Benny Workman, Andrew McLaughlin and John McIntyre on 31 apiece. Benny wins out on countback for second place and his blank at the fifth proved costly in competing for first place. He scored 17 points out with another 14 coming from the last six. Andrew was the man pushed into third spot with 18 of his points coming from the opening nine. A level par last six gave him another 13 to cement his placing. Andrew is the nephew of the winner and came close to making it a family affair at the top.

Fourth man was John McIntyre, a greenkeeper for Royal Portrush giving another connection with winner Des, scored 12 for the last six to be pushed down the field. His 19 out contained a birdie two, at the third, and he hit another one at the eleventh to double his money.
