GOLF: Team 9 take early lead at Foyle

The Pauls Butchers sponsored Spring League is now under way at Foyle with the qualifying section of the League running until March 20th.

The best six from ten cards counting and the top eight qualifiers will take part in the Match Play, and with eight weeks still left in the qualifying there is still more than ample time to enter a team.

With the first cards returned, Team 9 consisting of Stephen Radcliffe, Paul Maxwell, Stephen Moran and Niall Cassidy having returned a fine score of 98 points lead the way by two points from Team 6 of John J Logue, Cormac Cassidy, Albert Gurney and Kieran Duffy, currently in third spot on 95 points is Team 13 of Harry Lafferty, John Lafferty, John Duffy and Gary Kennedy, with a host of other teams also returning very good scores.

While unlucky thirteen had no bearing on Declan Harkin (19) as he produced an excellent winning score of 47 points in week 13 of the Foyle Sunday Society competitions.

Charlie McDermott (13) finished a distant second after a 41 points break of tie with third placed going to Declan Burns (20).

The Easter Egg competitions winners were Cormac McGeady, Harry Lafferty, Maurice Temple and Eamon O’Hagan.

Both Pauls Butchers Spring League and Easter Egg competitions continue daily, while it’s expected another big turnout will finish January in the Sunday Society competition this weekend.

Meanwhile in very blustery conditions at City of Derry in the Saturday Stableford Gerry Cleary (15) was the clear winner by two shots with a total of 29 points.

Runner up on break of tie was Past Captain, Eddie Leonard (12) with Jim McDaid (9) in third spot after they both finished with 27 points.

On Sunday two players finished with 30 points which was fantastic scoring on the long Prehen Course, John Hancock (11) edging out Brendan Duffy (7) on break of tie.

City of Derry members are reminded the AGM takes place in the clubhouse on Thursday night at 7.30pm
