Garrett’s Larne see off Donegal men in style

It was the home side who took the lead with a penalty before Garrett levelled matters with a penalty of his own.

An error then gave the Donegal captain a chance to go on a rampaging run seeing off a number of would-be tacklers. His burst through the Larne ranks opened space and Donegal ran in for a converted score under the posts.

Larne re-grouped and began to dominate with solid scrummaging from the front row of Lough, McAlister and Johnston. It wasn’t long until their dominance told and Garrett added another penalty before tries from Aston and McKinty put them in the driving seat.

McKinty ran another supberb line to score his second of the afternoon and Jordan Burns showed great pace to get on the scoresheet before half time. Garrett added all the conversions to leave the half time score 10 – 34.

The visitors came flying out the traps after the interval with Thomas picking up his first of the day before McKinty complete his hat-trick, both of which were coverted by Garrett.

The skipper soon to follow with his own try but this time he couldn’t convert.

Debutant Cameron set up Thomas’ second of the afternoon and straight from the re-start he went in under the sticks to also complete his hat-trick.

With Donegal floundering, Burns ran the length of the pitch to double his tally. With conversions added, the final score ended up at 10 – 74.

It was comprehensive victory for Larne after a slow start and they will look to continue this form this weekend against Belfast High School Former Pupils in the Gordon West Cup.

Meanwhile, Larne’s Seconds defeated Banbridge III 18-11, while the Thirds banked a 29-3 win over PSNI II.
