‘Steele should prove an able replacement for Deane’

Carrick boss Gary Haveron believes Simon Steele should prove an able replacement for Gareth Deane who was recalled from loan by Linfield last week.

Steele is expected to start in goal for Carrick when they entertain Dergview at Inver Park on Saturday morning.

“The loss of Gareth Deane is a big blow,” said Haveron. “He had played in every single game this season and the goalkeeping one was the one position that I never had to ponder about.

“But, with the departure of Alan Blayney to Ards, David Jeffrey felt the need to recall Gareth as cover and I have no doubt that his spell with Carrick has made him an even better goalkeeper.

“On the plus side, however, Simon Steele is back with the club and he will prove an able replacement. Simon left and went to Ards because he wasn’t getting first-team opportunities but he had played the last 12 or 13 games last season and kept nine clean sheets.”

The Spirit of ‘76 Supporters’ Club will be running a bus to Saturday’s game. It’s set to leave Taylor’s Avenue at 2 pm. Cost: £5 per person.
