Drumahoe men sink noisy neighbours

This tie was effectively over at half-time as Institute easily saw off neighbours Newbuildings United.

That man Stephen O’Flynn continued his tremendous goal scoring run netting his seventh and eighth goals in just four games, while Michael McCrudden also helped himself to a brace.

In fact McCrudden’s first goal just after the half-hour mark was the Drumahoe men at their best, on the counter attack, two super passes released the former Newcastle United starlet and he arrogantly slotted home.

The woodwork saved the visitor’s early on as after a goal mouth scramble Stephen Parkhouse’s close range header, which had United keeper Connor Thornton beaten, hit the post. To be honest the big striker should have scored.

Institute did break the deadlock a minute later when in-form O’Flynn broke clear of Peter Allen side’s defence before calmly lobbing the stranded Thornton, after United had lost possession.

Newbuildings suffered an injury set-back on 20 minutes when the struggling Thornton had to be replaced by Ryan McCloskey in goals.

United had their first chance on 23 minutes but Steven Wallace’s free-kick from the left hand edge of the box was tipped over by the alert ’Stute net-minder Michael Doherty.

Institute doubled their lead on 34 minutes following a slick counter-attack when from United’s corner Darren McCauley found Stephen Parkhouse who in turned fed the sprinting McCrudden and after running from box to box, he coolly dinged the ball over the McCloskey.

Minutes later the Drumahoe men added a third when McCrudden got clear down the left and his teasing centre found O’Flynn, who superbly back heeled the ball past McCloskey at the near post.

Institute netted a fourth on 54 minutes when McCauley’s run and cross from the left found an unmarked McCrudden and he gleefully side footed home from close range.

United’s top scorer Ricky Lee Dougherty found himself with some space on 69 minutes, after he got in behind the home side’s defence, but his low drive was superbly kept out by Doherty.

Dougherty showed tremendous pace on 78 minutes to easily get away from Gary Henderson and race into the box, but with Wallace totally unmarked in the centre the striker’s shot with his weaker left foot was saved by Doherty.

After that Dougherty effort neither side created much in the final few minutes, as Paul Kee’s side ran out comfortable winners.
