Festival of Pool will not run this year says league

Local pool has been dealt a major blow with the news that the Festival of Pool will not be held this year, for the first time in many years.

The extremely popular event was one of the key dates in the pool calendar.

Organisers though have been forced to take the decision due to financial reasons and dwindling support for some events.

They revealed the decision at last week’s AGM for the Tennents Coleraine Pool League in the Railway Arms.

A spokesperson for the league told Times Sport of the reasons behind the decision.

“The major decision to come out of the AGM was that, for the first time in many years, the league will not run a Festival of Pool,” they revealed.

“This decision was taken due to a combination of rising costs and falling support for the events.

“The relevant events will be slotted into the league programme, with Potters Snooker Club hosting the singles and doubles later on in the season.

“The money saved from the above decision has enabled to league to vastly reduce the entry fees required for this year’s league.”

In other business on the night the committee was elected with a couple of changes from last year.

Raymond Baxter and Trevor Harte have effectively swapped roles, into chairman and secretary respectively.

In order to reflect the changing requirements in terms of digital media, Steven McIlreavy has been appointed as media officer, responsible for online and paper media interaction.

Besides that, it is as we were with Arthur McMullan (treasuruer), Stephen Warwick and Willie Eakin all re-elected.

There were no concerns raised in relation to the league format etc. so all will stay as it was last season.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 th October in the Railway Arms. All teams wishing to enter the league must attend this meeting. They must bring a list of players to register (4 minimum, 7 maximum) as well as their £20 entry fee.
