East Coast Cheetahs put best foot forward at Titanic event

Sunday (April 6) was one of the most successful day’s in East Coast AC’s short history, with more than 70 athletes attending the Titanic Quarter 10k and associated mile race.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the mass participation of the club’s junior section, the East Coast Cheetahs, in the mile event.

Almost 40 junior athletes represented the club, with each and every one enjoying the experience.

In the 10k race, Paul Hutchinson was the first black and yellow vest to cross the line, recording 39:50 (76th) for the distance. Murray Deller just missed a sub 40-minute finish, taking 100th place in 40:55, before Janice Plumb led the club’s ladies home in 45:11 (18th).

Chris Davis clocked a new 10k personal best of 45:22 (250th), before Lee Stirling and Alan Glover ran 49:18 (464th) and 50:34 (544th) respectively.

Marty McToal followed less than 30 seconds later in 50:58 (560th), with Stephen Smyth crossing the line a mere three seconds behind him in 51:01 (565th). Lesley Robinson (94th – 51:54), Catherine Maxwell (99th – 52:03), April Clarke (103rd – 52:15) and Angela Campbell (105th – 52:09) all ran exceptionally well, with Catherine slashing almost six minutes off her previous best for the distance.

Michelle Shannon covered the course in 54:17 (152nd), just in front of Sandy Plumb (766th place – 54:53), Paddy Campbell (783rd – 54:37) and Nikki McNeill (168th – 54:42). Gillian Leetch-Armstrong improved her personal best with a 56:03 (193nd) finish time; Carol Clarke joined Gillian in the finish area a short time later, after running 56:11 (194th).

Kelly Deller (242nd – 57:21) and Mandy McToal (286th – 58:57) finished just before 10k debutant Rowena Davis, who alongside friend Gill James, recorded 58:58 (294th).

Tracey Parke followed in 59:24 (311th), before Jacque Craig became another ECAC athlete to improve their personal best, after running 59:34 (315th).

Other times: Martin Taylor 1:00:37; Angela Burns (1:04:08): Marie Glover (1:04:58), Tracey Shannon (1:06:11); Mags Clements (1:09:52); Dan McGuckian (1:11:09). Ruth Kelly 1:15:23 ; Linzi Conway 1:16:07; Kirstie Gore 1:27:41.

Meanwhile, Callum Sittlington completed the Lisburn Duathlon in 1:06:04 (45th).
