Barber going the extra mile

DRUMAHOE man Ivan Barber is running the Belfast Marathon on May 7th to raise funds for the NI Chest, Heart & Stroke.

Having only recently retired from playing rugby for Londonderry YM, Ivan took to the roads of Londonderry with the aim of keeping fit.

Then in April of last year, when his brother George (ex City of Derry and Lenzie RFC) died of a heart related illness in Scotland the idea of “going the extra mile” to raise money for CHSS came to bear.

Having a former team-mate and founder member of the YMCA RFC Jim Huey pass away on the field of play back in 2004 had also been playing on Ivan’s mind (as both he and Jim had been very keen and competitive in all aspects of team training over the years)

Ivan last ran the Marathon in 2009 for fun finishing in a slowish 4 hours and 12 minutes and has trained very hard since last November with the aim of finishing in or around 3 hours and 45 minutes this year. Ivan’s aim is to raise upwards of £1000 for the CHSS.

He would like anyone interested in donating to TEXT HKMB87 £2 (or desired amount) TO 70070 or log on to www.justgiving.com/ivan-barber and donate that way.

The thought of any money raised will certainly make the final 6 or 7 miles of the marathon a little easier to bear.
