Waterways Ireland surveys Lower Bann

AHEAD of the 2010 boating season, Waterways Ireland is to undertake the annual survey of the Lower Bann Navigation between Lough Neagh and Coleraine.

A particular focus will be placed on damage that may have occurred on the waterway due to the severity of the winter weather.

The survey will also note debris and other objects that may impact on the navigability of the river.

Regular waterways users on the Lower Bann will have experienced significant improvements in the quality of facilities that have been put in place along the navigation.

Waterways Ireland, has upgraded many facilities along the river. Ageing timber jetties have been replaced with modern floating jetties. This has resulted in a significant increase in mooring capacity and improved access to all of the locks. New aids to navigation have also been placed to improve safety on the river.

An essential source of navigation and recreation information for users of the river planning a trip is the Waterways Ireland guide to the Lower Bann. ‘The Guide to the Lower Bann; Navigation and Recreation Information’ was launched in 2009 and provides a map of the waterway, highlighting the facilities and services provided.

Waterways Ireland invites waterways users to contact the office during working hours - telephone 028 7034 4342 - or visit Waterways Ireland at the Cutts, Coleraine regarding any navigational and operational issues on the River.
