Warning after fake bank notes seized in Larne

Officers recovered fake currency after searching a person in the town on Saturday.

One arrest has been made and enquiries are continuing.

And on Friday, a number of fake £10 Ulster Bank notes were seized after being passed on to a local shop.

In the wake of the seizures, the PSNI has issued tips on how to spot fake notes:

FEEL - the paper should feel stiff and crisp, not limp, waxy or shiny.

COMPARE - always compare both sides of a suspect note to one you know is genuine. The difference will be easy to spot.

WATERMARK - each note contains a watermark that appears when held up to the light.

THREAD - each note contains a security thread which shows a continuous line when held up to the light.

SERIAL NUMBER - if handed more than one suspect note, check the serial numbers are not the same.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Counterfeit notes can be very realistic, although these look good, they feel poor in quality.

“Check your change, as fake money is seized by Police with no compensation given. Don’t get caught out.”
