Mitchell House pupil Katie Millar, 9, has undergone a host of operations including having a shunt placed in her head and her legs straightened.

Last year, Katie had major surgery on her airway, which left her unable to travel to Lapland to meet Santa.

After Katie’s mum Ruth Donaghy mentioned her daughter’s disappointment to local charity worker Maggie Taggart, the NI Children to Lapland and Days to Remember Trust secretly arranged for the youngster to meet her idols

Ruth told the Times: “She’s a big 1D fan, she absolutely idolises Louis but she had no idea were going to the concert.

“We told her we were going bowling and then when we got to the car park I revealed we were going to the show.”

“She was surprised and pleased and then I asked her how she would feel if she could meet the boys and she said she would scream!”

However, Katie was left “gutted” after Tuesday night’s performance and her meeting with One Direction was cancelled due to band member Liam’s illness.

“They announced the next day that the show would be rescheduled for Friday, but we didn’t know until Friday afternoon that the meet and greet would go ahead,” Ruth continued.

“We went in to see them before the show. The boys hugged her and talked to her and Liam whispered in her ear. He told her she is beautiful.

“She has pictures of Liam and Louis on her wheelchair guards and they were fighting over who she fancied most!

“She had brought little chocolate plaques iced with their names which they liked.

“She was gutted when she had to go back to her seat!”

Ruth says that her daughter is still “buzzing” from the experience.

“She is going around the house wearing her VIP pass and can’t wait to show off to her school friends!” she laughed.

“I would like to thank the Lapland Trust, Maggie Taggart and Claire for making this possible.”

Chair of the NI Children to Lapland and Days to Remember Trust Jack Rodgers said: “This is another option we offer for sick children. It’s nice it worked out.”
