Update: Traffic lights fixed while reckless driver sought

The traffic lights at the Portadown Road/Old Portadown Road junction have been repaired, and it has been revealed the damage was caused by a reckless driver.

The lights were fixed earlier today (Saturday, April 4) and local police announced: “The traffic lights have been fixed and are now back up and running. Good news and relief to all. Thanks to everyone for their caution and care whilst there were no lights available.”

Giving background information on the fault, police said: “In the small hours of Friday morning, a distinctive VW Beatle was stolen from Tandragee Road area of Lurgan.

“After some very dangerous driving in the vicinity of the town centre it crashed at approximately 2.26am into the electric box controlling the traffic lights at the Portadown/Old Portadown Road junction knocking them out.

“The driver fled the scene on foot. We are actively investigating this incident and are very keen to identify and catch up with the driver. Anyone who may be able to assist please contact Police ASAP.”
