Unpleasant odour 'horrific' says Lisburn resident

RESIDENTS in the Hulls Hill area say something needs to be done about unpleasant odours they believe are coming from the Coca Cola site at Knockmore Hill. However a spokesperson for Coca Cola says the company does not believe it is the source of the bad smell.

Father of four Gordon Wright says the stench is horrific at times and must be dealt with immediately.

He said the Northern Ireland Environment Agency had been in touch with the plant and for a while the smell stopped but has since returned. "We had guests overrecently and the smell was stinking. We were embarrassed in front of our visitors. At times we can't even open our windows and during hot days it is awful. Something has to be done to stop it completely."

He continued: "We are paying our rates and do not want to be living with this."

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) said they have received a number of complaints regarding an odour said to be coming from the Coca Cola Knockmore site.

"The company have been notified of these complaints and are currently working to identify the source of the odour and put in place controls to prevent or minimise it," said an NIEA spokesperson.

Coca-Cola commented: "We are aware of the complaint although we don't believe the odour is coming from the plant. The issue is being investigated in line with standard practice to identify if the source is coming from the plant.

"We have received one complaint from one resident."
