Uncertain future for travel firm

THE future looks bleak for a Lisburn travel firm which is earmarked for closure.

The Lisburn Co-operative Travel store on Antrim Street is currently undergoing a period of consultation with the travel chain Thomas Cook who own the local branch.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook said: “We’re currently in consultation with colleagues at the Lisburn Co-operative Travel store, the proposal to close the store was announced mid-December and we continue to work with colleagues during the 90 days consultation.”

One concerned traveller who uses the Lisburn business is disaapointed at the news. They said: “I was both sad and angry at the news of the closure of our local Co-Op Travel office in Antrim Street with the loss of all jobs- and this is all thanks to Thomas Cook travel company.

“The girls in the Co-op go the extra mile in organising holidays for customers and I feel sickened that this large company has trampled the smaller, more vulnerable office staff without a thought for the loyal customers who have generated substantial trade over the years.

“These girls will be made redundant through no fault of their own - their only ‘sin’ was to remain loyal to the Co-op. I hope that any customers, like myself who feel angered at this predicament, will voice their concerns and contact the HR department of Thomas Cook as I did - these girls deserve our backing.”
