Listen: Dr Éamonn Ó Ciardha lecture on plantation of Ulster

EARLY modern historian Dr Éamonn Ó Ciardha brought the Nine Years’ War, the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster to life in the opening ‘Island Voices’ Autumn lecture series in the Tower Museum on Thursday (September 26).

As well as referring to the Flight of the Earls from Rathmullan, Dr Ó Ciardha also spoke about Turlough Luineach Ó Neill - who built his fort at Dunnalong - and his submission to the Crown.

He told how the Irish Jesuits and Franciscans were regarded as a kind of al-Qaeda network by their Protestant contemporaries and spoke about the Archbishop of Armagh, Peter Lombard, who persecuted Galileo.

The lecture primarily explored the Gaelic response to Flight of the Earls and Plantation and how they have been recorded in contemporary Irish writings.

Dr Ó Ciardha has edited a number of works on the subject, such as ‘The plantation of Ulster: Ideology and Practice’ and ‘The Flight of the Earls.’The second lecture in the series entitled Notable Ulster-Scots Women and Men and their legacy takes place on Thursday (October 24, 2013) and will be delivered by Frank Carey, formerly a researcher with the Institute of Ulster-Scots Studies at the University of Ulster and currently working on the Peace Walls project in the city.

In his talk Frank will explore the lives and stories of lesser-known Ulster-Scots figures from the local area and assess their enduring legacy.

The third and final talk in the series entitled The Plantation of Ulster: Process, People and Perspectives – The Background of a Narrative Art Quilt: takes place on Thursday (November 21) and will be delivered by Deborah J Stockdale, a textile artist living in south west Donegal.

In this, the final talk in the series, the artist will describe how she researched and created the Plantation art quilt which features in the new Plantation of Ulster museum exhibition housed in Derry’s recently refurbished Guildhall.
