Two cargo ships and utility vessel berthed at Lisahally

Two general cargo ships - the UK-registered, Eastern Vanquish, and the Netherlands-registered, Marit, as well as the UK-registered utility vessel, the Aileen M, were all docked at the Londonderry port.

The fire service revealed on Tuesday that a fire had broken out on a ship’s cabin but it didn’t reveal the identity of the ship affected.

There were no injuries.

Whilst the Aileen M has been in port since January 12, the Eastern Vanquish arrived from Cardiff in recent days.

The Marit is also recently arrived.

The Port facilitates the import of huge quantities of coal, oil, animal feed and fertiliser as well as a range of exports.

It handles 39 per cent of Northern Ireland’s oil imports and 21 per cent of its coal imports.

The identity of the affected vessel has not been revealed but the Sentinel has asked the Port for details and will publish them once received.
