Top accolade for Ballycastle academic

This signal award is in recognition of his major contributions to the social sciences, both in the UK and internationally.

Professor Hargie was selected and nominated for the Award of Academician by the British Psychological Society, of which he is a Fellow, and so this Award is a double recognition of his achievements.

The formal presentation will take place in London, when Professor Hargie will be presented with the Award by the President of the UK Academy of Social Sciences, Sir Ivor Crewe.

Professor Hargie, from the School of Communication at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, is a former pupil of Ballycastle High School.

He is a prolific academic, having published 22 books, 11 Research Reports, 70 book chapters, and 126 Journal articles. His work has also been published in several languages. Throughout his long career, his social science research has had major significance for the wider community, outside of academia.

Professor Hargie said: “I am delighted to be receiving this honour. It is very rewarding, in that it is recognition that my work has made a real difference. It is indeed very gratifying to have one’s work recognised in this way.”

Professor Hargie is currently funded by OFMDFM to look at Social Exclusion and Sport in Northern Ireland.
