The only way is down ... feet first

A NEW chapter in the history of Carrick Castle has been written after the Keep hosted its first charity abseil.

Travelling in the opposite direction to many who attempted to storm the medieval stronghold down the centuries were 71 brave souls raising funds for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.

Rochine Weir, from Ladbrokes, was one of the first to abseil down and in the process raised 525.00 for the NICFC.

She commented: “The abseil was a challenging but exhilarating experience and it was fantastic to complete this challenge in my own hometown.

“It was a real pleasure to raise money for a local charity, who support local children and young people who are living with cancer.”

On a Sunny Sunday morning, all the participants successfully negotiated the 90ft descent and were thanked for their effort.

Dawn Weir, Community Fundraiser with NICFC, added: “ So far, over 11,000 has been raised for the charity which will make a real difference to the lives of many families throughout Northern Ireland.

“I’d also like to thank Carrickfergus Castle for accommodating us for the abseil, it was great to be involved in creating a piece of history for the Castle.”

The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children works with children, young people, teenagers and young adults up to 24-years-old living with cancer, as well as their parents, siblings and other family members.
