Shock closure of Carrick hotel

CARRICK’S hospitality sector has been dealt a major blow with the sudden closure of the long-established Coast Road Hotel (pic left).

Signs went up last week announcing the family-run venue, which has operated in the town’s Scotch Quarter for over 50 years, has shut.

In an emotional interview with the Carrick Times on Tuesday, the hotel’s proprietor Roland Bailie said that a series of historical financial difficulties led to the decision to close despite an increase in trade over the past six months.

A combination of drainage improvement works by Northern Ireland Water, cancellations during last year’s severe winter, and a stalled building project adjacent to the hotel all caused major disruption to trade in 2009/2010, according to the owner.

“Due to the loss of trade, the hotel got into some difficulties which resulted in us owing money to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs,” said Mr Bailie.
