Romanian folk music Concert at Cathedral

Two of the world's most highly acclaimed musicians are to make a one-off concert appearance at St Columb's Cathedral tomorrow, Thursday.

Celebrated Romanian folk musicians, Ulrich Herkenhoff and Alexandre Cellier, will step out onto the stage in the historic cathedral at 7.30pm.

Herkenhoff will perform on the panflute, while Cellier will preside at the piano and on the organ.

The event does not have a cover charge, but the Dean of Derry, Very Rev Dr William Morton, has appealed for donations to offset the cost of hiring the piano for this concert event.

“We are delighted that Ulrich and Alexandre have consented to perform at St Columb’s Cathedral, adding another layer of diversity and colour to the rich tapestry of music associated with the cathedral.

“The cathedral looks forward to welcoming these two internationally celebrated musicians. As a graduate in music myself, I am particularly looking forward to enjoying the performance.

“It promises to be a lively concert and we hope that it will be suitably supported. Londonderry is a city noted for its musical prowess and I hope that musicians, music lovers and students of the many kinds of music traditions make the effort to attend. You will all be made most welcome,” he said.

Herkenhoff took his first piano lessons at the age of six. At 14 he began to play the panpipes.

By contrast, Cellier is a Swiss musician who plays a plethora of instruments. As a child he was surrounded by gypsy music recorded by his parents, Catherine and Marcel Cellier.
