Record turnout to honour heroes who fought and died for freedom

LONDONDERRYThe largest turn-out in years at Remembrance Sunday ceremonies in the city heard the Rev Dr William Morton, Dean of St Columb’s Cathedral, conduct the Diamond service.

Wreaths were laid by Lord Lieutenant of Londonderry Dr Angela Garvey and the SDLP mayor Councillor Brenda Stevenson. The Royal British Legion had a prominent role, with voluntary and emergency organisations and the loyal orders also laying wreaths. A cathedral service, attended by 300 people, was conducted by Derry and Raphoe bishop the Rev Ken Good.

COLERAINE

DUP Mayor George Duddy led tributes at the Diamond. He was joined by council colleagues, with the Royal British Legion playing a leading role in the wreath-laying. Earlier, Coleraine branch of the Royal Regiment of the Artillery held a muster at the TA camp. Remembrance events were also held in Castlerock, Portrush, Portstewart, Garvagh and Aghadowey.

The memorial service was conducted by the Rev Sam McVeigh, Northern Ireland chaplain of the Royal British Legion, assisted by Roman Catholic parish priest Monsignor Bryan McCanny, and Presbyterian minister the Rev Tom Mawhinney. A wreath was laid by Harry Boyle, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Co Londonderry and by DUP mayor Councillor Alan Robinson. The parade was to First Limavady Presbyterian Church, led by Trench Memorial flute

band.

Royal British Legion members attended a service in Union Road Presbyterian Church, after wreath-laying ceremonies. An evening service and parade was held to Tobermore Baptist Church. South Antrim DUP MP the Rev William McCrea conducted a remembrance service in Calvary Free Presbyterian Church, Magherafelt, last night. Royal British Legion, security force personnel, emergency service and district council representatives attended.

Upperlands Royal British Legion branch organised two events – a wreath-laying and service at Kilrea’s Diamond in the morning and a service in Maghera Parish Church in the afternoon.

CASTLEDAWSON

War memorial wreath-laying was led by the Royal British Legion, with Castledawson flute band heading a parade to a

service in the Presbyterian church.
