£7.9k spent on prison dogs

THE prison service spent £7,974 keeping guard dogs at Magilligan jail over the past three years

Thirteen dogs were kept at the jail in both 2007/8 and 2008/9 reduced to nine in 2009/10.

The majority of costs for the upkeep of prison dogs are for the purchase of the dogs, dog training, vet bills, food, dog training products and replacement kennels.

The Justice Minister David Ford outlined the details in response to an Assembly Question from SDLP MLA John Dallat.
