Prominent businessman killed in road crash

Raymond Turkington, who was in his 80s, died after a four vehicle collision on the Drum Road, Cookstown.

Tribute has been paid to Mr Turkington who was described as a well known and respected businessman in the Co Tyrone town.

Cookstown Ulster Unionist Councillor Trevor Wilson said; “Raymond was an absolute gentleman. Very well respected and very well liked.

“Everybody knew him and the family.

“I have been taking so many calls from people who are just in shock and can’t believe it.

“Cookstown has lost one of its main businessmen and respected citizens.”

Mr Turkington was also well known within the motorsport fraternity.

He owned Turkington Interiors at Sweep Road in the town, which has closed as mark of respect - a notice on their Facebook page stated: “Turkington’s will be closed until further notice due to bereavement within the family.

“We would like to thank our loyal customers for their support and we ask for privacy at this difficult time. The Turkington family.”

Police confirmed that a man in his 80s who was from the Cookstown area has died following, what they described as, a four vehicle road traffic collision on the Drum Road in Cookstown on Thursday, August 27.

Inspector Irvine said: “At around 5:10pm, it was reported that a black Mini car, a Volvo lorry, a Mercedes Goods vehicle and a Renault Kangoo were involved in the collision. The driver of the Mini was treated at the scene but sadly passed away as a result of his injuries.

“The Drum Road was closed as officers attended, with the road now reopened following the incident.

“Our enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage available, to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1406 27/08/20.”
