Prisoner fund and education costs £2m

THE cost of providing education, recreation and leisure for prisoners at HMP Magilligan was £2,184,205 over the past three years.

The expenditure on equipment costs for education was £228,169 dipping from £100,723 in 2007/8 to £92,404 in 2008/9 and further to just £35,042 in 2009/10.

The cost of providing equipment for recreation and leisure was £180,736 down from £70,468 in 2007/8 to £30,503 in 2008/9 and rising again to £76,765 in 2009/10.

The total cost of providing tutors at the County Londonderry jail during the last three years was £1,440,639: £353,361 in 2007/8; £374,116 in 2008/9; £399,482 in 2009/10; and £313,680 in 2010/11 to date.

Examination fees cost £69,942 in total during the same timeframe: £10,303 in 2007/8, £18,521 in 2008/9, £16,898 in 2009/10 and £24,220 in 2010/11 to date.

And the total associated costs incurred by education departments over the period was £264,719; £100,723 in 2007/8; £92,404 in 2008/9; £35,042 in 2009/10 and £36,550 in 2010/11 to date.

Justice Minister David Ford outlined the spending in response to an Assembly Question from East Londonderry MLA John Dallat.
