Potter Adam wins major gong at RDS National Crafts Awards

A Portstewart potter has been named as one the main prizewinners in this year’s RDS National Crafts Competition.

Adam Frew’s Scribble Pot scooped the RDS New Entrants’ Prize, the €1,500, Crafts Council of Ireland Purchase Award.

Adam’s work is inspired by traditional eastern forms as well as spontaneity as a means of personal expression.

His prize winning work is a beautifully thrown porcelain pot which has been gas fired and inlaid with slip, celadon and copper red glaze.

“The exuberant action of throwing is enhanced by a continued experimentation through process, form and colour,” the judges said.

‘The nature of Adam’s ceramic pots allows the owner to continually revisit their purchase, gaining pleasure from seeing new and wonderful things in its quirky decoration,” commented Kim Mawhinney, Head of Art, Ulster Museum & Chair of judging panel.

From the potter’s wheel and the woodturner’s lathe, to the jeweller’s bench and the weaver’s loom, this Competition aims to reward crafted excellence in all its forms.

Regarded as one of the largest competitive platforms for Craft in Europe, the RDS brings an international panel of judges to Ireland to adjudicate its 20 category RDS National Crafts Competition. With a prize fund of €24,000, the highest accolade is the RDS Award of Excellence of €7,000 and the California Gold Medal.

The competition is renowned for celebrating excellence in traditional craftsmanship as well as encouraging innovative design and creativity through a wide range of craft processes.

Both established and emerging craft artists and designers can compete for awards such as the RDS Award of Excellence, the RDS Graduate and New Entrants’ Prize, which Adam won.

. The competition is part of the RDS Foundation Arts Programme, the goal of which is to provide a platform that supports students and emerging artists.
