Voice of Mark Duggan campaign will give main address at Bloody Sunday commemoration

Stafford Scott, Co-ordinator of Tottenham Rights and Co-founder of the Broadwater Farm Defence Campaign has been one of those vocalising the anger felt by many in North London after an inquest jury found earlier this month that the part-Irish 29-year-old had been “lawfully killed” by police.

Mr Duggan was shot dead getting out of a taxi in Tottenham by armed members of the Metropolitan Police in 2011. The police officer who shot him believed he was armed, the inquest heard.

The jury concluded that Mr Duggan had been “lawfully killed” despite a majority also accepting he was unarmed when shot dead.

The incident is credited with precipitating the London riots of 2011.

Mr Scott will be the main speaker after the Sunday march but he will also be speaking on Saturday night in Pilots Row, about his community’s experience of policing, from the Broadwater Farm riots 20 years ago to the more recent killing of Mr Duggan.

Amongst a diverse collection of speakers attending this year’s commemoration are Phil Scraton, Paddy Hill, Patricia Lundy and Clare Daly.

The Bloody Sunday March Committee stated: “Professor Phil Scraton will give a lecture on Friday at the Nerve Centre on the police cover-up of the Hillsborough deaths.

“Paddy Hill of the Birmingham Six will be speaking on Saturday afternoon both about the injustice suffered by himself and the five others - and also about the right of the families of the victims of the Birmingham bombs to truth and justice.

“Professor Patricia Lundy will also speak at this event on her groundbreaking research into the Historical Enquiries Team (HET).

“Representatives of the Shell to Sea campaign in Mayo, the anti-fracking campaign in Fermanagh and Leitrim, Clare Daly TD, leader of the anti-austerity campaign in the South and a range of others will also be speaking in Pilot’s Row on Saturday.”
