Commenting on the clean up, a spokesperson for the Six Mile Water Trust said: “It is sad that each year we see similar amounts being lifted. The message is not being heard. The majority of rubbish was plastic drink bottles and aluminium cans.

“Well done to the ladies and gents who took part in the clean up. They are a credit to the clubs they represent.

The organisers are pushing to have the event recognised and scheduled as a ‘National Rivers Clean Up Day.’
