Normally the events would see crowds of people flock to the respective town centres, however, due to Covid pandemic restrictions celebrations have moved online.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is encouraging residents to tune in to its social channels this evening (Friday, November 20) at 7.00pm for the virtual Larne Christmas lights switch-on

Council states: “We’ll have music, Christmas stories and even a few special guests stopping by too!”

And the following evening (Saturday, November 21) at the same time it is the turn of Carrickfergus to join the seasonal celebrations.

The Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, is encouraging the public to enjoy the magic of Christmas differently as council promises a packed programme of virtual festive activities.

As with every year, the local authority will continue to work with community groups across the borough to erect Christmas trees, however, it is encouraging members of the public not to gather around them for switch-on events.

“Christmas will look different this year due to the need for us all to work together to protect the health of our community,” the Mayor added.

“While we are unable to hold events where people might gather in large numbers, we will still all be able to share in the magic of Christmas, albeit virtually and from the comfort of our own homes.

“I encourage everyone to safely #Rediscover the #SpiritofMEA this Christmas at home.”
