All roads lead to Cage Soccer showpiece at Benone

THE much anticipated Cage Sport – Battle of the Borough soccer tournament kicks off next week, with all roads leading to the regional final at Benone Strand in March.

Two player teams will compete in two minute caged soccer games set to music and a total of 16 qualifying teams will have the opportunity to represent their area at the showpiece final.

Magilligan hosts the opening local qualifier on Wednesday, February 6.

This exciting new youth diversionary programme - delivered by Limavady Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), in partnership with Limavady Borough Council’s Sports Development Team - will run in various outdoor locations across the borough, culminating in a domestic final on Friday, February 22 in Limavady town.

Commenting on the launch of the tournament, Councillor Brenda Chivers, PCSP Chair said: “We are delighted to announce this exciting sport programme and hope that young people from across the borough will get involved in this project.

“There has been a high level of interest to date. Importantly, these events are free and open to all. We are encouraging male and female teams to come forward and take part.”

Eight local qualifiers will decide who progresses to the Limavady final at Scroggy Road Playing Fields, with the winners then representing the Borough at the ‘Battle on the Beach’ Cage Soccer final on Saturday, March 9.

The tournament will take place in the following locations across the Limavady Borough: Magilligan on Wednesday, February 6 at St Aidens GAC pitch; Dungiven on Thursday, February 7 at Dungiven MUGA pitch; Limavady Town on Friday, February 9 at Scroggy Road Playing Fields; Ballykelly on Wednesday, February 13 at Kings Lane; Drumsurn on Thursday, February 14 at St Matthews GAA; Feeny on Friday, February 15 at St Marys GAA; Greysteel on Wednesday, February 20 at Vale Centre and Limavady Town on Thursday, February 21 at Scroggy Road Playing Fields.

There are a total of four sections in which players can compete, including Junior Boys Age 12-14, Junior Girls Age 12-14, Senior Boys Age 15-17 and Senior Girls Age 15-17.
