New bannerette dedicated for 
Armoy and Drumtullagh branchMemorable night for local branch of Mothers’ Union

For not only did the ladies host the Autumn Area Service of the North Connor Mothers’ Union at Drumtullagh, but they also dedicated a new banner – the first since the local Union was formed in November 1953.

A packed congregation was led by the Rector, Rev. Derek Steele and also in attendance were Mrs. Moira Thom, Diocesan President, and Mrs. Rena Lindsay, North Connor Area chairperson.

This was an evening that enjoyed total support from other branches of the Mothers’ Union which included representatives from Ballycastle, Ballymoney, Portrush, Portstewart, Coleraine and Rasharkin.

The new bannerette drew much praise from visiting members and the Diocesan President, Mrs. Thom was quick to compliment its design.

Indeed, at a gathering afterwards which enabled members to engage in social pleasantries, the talk also focused on the design of the bannerette and the uplifting church service.

The work of the Mothers’ Union and the items offered for sale to help strengthen the worldwide work of the movement, was showcased in the church hall by Mrs. Emma Ferris the Enterprise Representative for North and Mid-Connor.

Local officials of the Armoy and Drumtullagh Union who played a role in the ceremony included Beth Hayes, chairperson, Linda Glass and Betty Calvert. Renie Hill daughter of one of the founding members was also present.

Also participating in the service were Valerie Ash, Coordinator of the Faith and Policy Unit, and Merle McNabb, Area Prayer representative.

There was acknowledgement of the founder members of the branch – Elizabeth Laverty, Mrs Stewart-Moore, Alice Ferguson, Elizabeth McAuley and Mrs. Price.

Those present were delighted to welcome Mrs. Maud Cochrane, the oldest serving member who was accompanied by her niece, Annie Hamill. Mrs. Cochane was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Mrs. Hayes and another bouquet was given to Mrs. Thom.

And in a surprise presentation, Mrs. Gina Wysner was presented with a card to acknowledge her 50th wedding anniversary the following day. Mrs. Wysner and her husband, Roland, were highly respected members of the business community in Ballycastle who retired from their busy butchers shop several years ago.
