Motion to retain HMP Magilligan at Limavady council

A MOTION is to be presented to Limavady Borough Council tonight (Tuesday, June 19) to support the retention of Magilligan Prison, by DUP councillors Alan Robinson, George Robinson and James McCorkell.

The motion proposes: “That this Council is extremely concerned at Prison Service proposals, which if carried out regarding Magilligan Prison would mean over 400 jobs in the local economy being lost and up to £10 million per year being lost on local goods and services, and along with the previous loss of 1,000 jobs at Seagate, Council now presents a totally united front to preserve existing employment prospects while developing others to work alongside them for the future.”

Justice Minister David Ford is currently seeking consultations on the Northern Ireland Prison Service’s Outline Estate Strategy, which includes the decommissioning of HMP Magilligan by 2018.
