About 40 students - aged 12 to 16 - from Northern Spain will be hosted by local families this July - and its not to late to express an interest in taking part.

Project leader Oihana Beraza said: “The main purpose of this programme is to help improve the students English language skills.

“We have developed a culture exchange programme in which traditional sports, social and cultural activities as well as regular excursions and a three-day trip are organised so the students also learn and immerse into the way of living of the locals.”

Staying with the families for a month gives the students an opportunity to see the real way of living as they will take part day to day life.

“It is also important to link up with other schools and communities that work on culture and language development,” she continued.

If you would like to get involved the local coordinator is Simon Holmes, who has already carried out a leaflet drop in the area.

He said they would prefer host families to be located within a 10-mile radius of Magherafelt.

“The further out you go there may be logistical or transport issues,” he explained. “We have families from Draperstown, Bellaghy, Moneymore and Castledawson.

“As long as the families are happy with transportation to and from activities, I don’t mind where they are from. It is easier if they are from Magherafelt, means that the students can walk to and from activities if necessary. Lessens the burden on families as well.”
