Lurgan man in court charged with arson endangering life

A man has appeared in court today charged with arson endangering life after a man was dramatically rescued by fire crews in Lurgan yesterday (Wednesday).

Paul Cassidy, aged 25, from Mark Street, was remanded in custody after appearing at Lisburn Magistrates Court today.

His court appearance follows a fire in Mark St on Wednesday afternooon.

Fire crews had been called at 3.50pm with reports that a mattress had been set alight in the stairwell of the flats.

A man in his 20s was rescued by fire crews said NI Fire and Rescue spokesperson yesterday.

Cassidy is charged with arson endangering life, that he without lawful excuse damaged by fire a flat belonging to the NI Housing Executive and was reckless as to wheter the lives of neighbours would be endangered.

The case has been adjourned to Craigavon Magistrates court on November 13 where he is to appear via video link.

He was remanded in custody to Maghaberry Prison.
