Letter: Why should one name be favoured over the other?

Dear editor,A number of longstanding members of the London branch of Londonderry High School Old Girls met recently to discuss the proposed change of name for Foyle and Londonderry College.

We wish to register our displeasure at the way in which it has been dealt with. Absolutely no consultation had taken place prior to a recent announcement in the press. We would have expected the Board of Governors to at least have the courtesy to inform all branches of the L.H.S. Old Girls via our representative in Londonderry at an early stage in the process.

We are very proud of L.H.S. which stemmed from Strand House School, a pioneering institution for girl's education from 1860. Old girls benefited from a high standard of education which allowed them to achieve their potential in a wide variety of ways.

It is amazing to expect us to meekly accept that the amalgamation should turn into a takeover. We fail to understand why one name should be favoured over the other.

Both L.H.S. and Foyle College are products of previous educational establishments and did not have an unbroken history, therefore to try to claim a four hundredth anniversary for Foyle College is an anomaly.

We feel that the school should only be rebranded upon its move to Clooney when a completely different name should be chosen.

In the light of growing groundswell of feeling we expect the Board of Governors to review the situation in consultation with L.H.S. Old Girls.
