Illegal immigrant arrested in Portadown takeaway

A 39-year-old Bangladeshi man has been arrested during an operation by immigration officers on Thursday, January 7.

Acting on intelligence, officers visited the Indian Tree takeaway in Carleton Street, where it was found that the man was in the country illegally.

However, a civil penalty notice was not issued to the Indian Tree as the man was present on the premises but not seen to be working.

Mike Golden, from Immigration Enforcement, said, “As this operation shows, we are working hard to arrest and remove those who abuse the UK’s immigration system.

“Using illegal labour is not a victimless crime. It cheats the taxpayer, undercuts businesses who ply an honest trade and deprives legitimate job seekers of employment opportunities.

“There are simple checks employers can carry out to ensure employees have the right to work in the UK.

“I would urge anyone with specific information about suspected immigration abuse to contact us.”
