Garron Road to close for 12 weeks

Regional development Minister Danny Kennedy revealed in a letter to East Antrim MLA Oliver McMullan that Garron Road would shut in late December, with diversions being put in place at Tower Road.

Responding to Mr McMullan’s question regarding road restrictions at Garron Point, Mr Kennedy said: “My Department’s Roads Service has advised that a design for the scaling and netting of the limestone rock face is currently being finalised and it is hoped that, weather permitting, construction work will commence in late December.

“It is estimated that construction work will last 12 weeks, with the Garron Road fully reopening to traffic by the end of March.”

Coast Road Councillor James McKeown said the announcement was “good news” and urged motorists to be patient while the work is ongoing.

The Sinn Fein representative added: “I realise that this will cause some disruption for motorists, but in the long-term it will make that part of the road safer and help secure tourism in the area.”
