Foyle children make waves

MEMBERS of the Foyle branch of Autism NI have had fun on the waves at Enagh Lough on the outskirts of the City, as part of a 'Have a go canoeing' session.

The children enjoyed their day out on Monday last, September 27, with the organisation Life (www.onegreatadventure.com), which was just one of the outdoor activities the group has taken part in the past few weeks, which included archery, climbing and team building games. Prior to the canoeing a leisurely stroll around Ness Country Park allowed other group members to also enjoy the great outdoors.

These outdoor activity taster sessions have been put in place by the Venture Outdoors - Creating Healthy Communities project with the aim of helping those from disabled, minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities all over Northern Ireland access the outdoors, encouraging them to take part in outdoor activities and also learn about where they can get involved in outdoor activities in their local area.

Offering the taster sessions is the first step to achieving this goal. The Autism NI Foyle group is one of six branches of Autism NI, a parent-led partnership organisation formed to promote positive collaboration between parents, professionals and individuals with Autism to address the need for appropriate services.

The Foyle group is one of only 40 other community initiatives across Northern Ireland enjoying taster sessions with Venture Outdoors.

The Venture Outdoors Project is a three-year initiative of the Countryside Access and Activities Network (CAAN) and has been provided with a grant of 470,000 from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities Programme and Ulster Gardens Villages.
