A former Banbridge Academy pupil has become the first female editor of a daily newspaper in Northern Ireland with confirmation that she is to take the top job at the Belfast Telegraph.

Gail Walker takes over immediately at the title following the departure of Mike Gilson in January.

She began her career with the Telegraph as a graduate trainee in 1990 after attending Queen’s.

She was most recently the newspaper’s Deputy Editor and Features Editor.

Gail has won numerous awards throughout her career, including CIPR feature writer of the year in 2013.
