Final chapter on Dunmurry library 'within months'

DUNMURRY Library will close its doors for the final time in the next few months, it has been confirmed.

Libraries NI announced last week that following a consultation period a number of libraries in the Greater Belfast area, including Dunmurry, would close.

According to Helen Osborn, Director of Service Delivery with Libraries NI, Dunmurry Library, which is currently only open for 14 hours a week, is unable to provide a 21st century library service.

"Dunmurry is a very small library, built in 1947 and is a shared facility with the health centre," she explained.

"There isn't really enough space to offer a proper 21st century library service. It is only 110 square metres, including staff accommodation, and there is no possibility of expansion.

"The library can't supply the range of books or offer the activities we would normally offer in a library."

She said that Dunmurry was close to other libraries, including Finaghy and Lisburn, and indicated that Libraries NI would be looking at expanding the mobile library service in the Dunmurry area.

The decision to close the library was made following a consultation which, according to Ms Osborn, received a low response from Dunmurry Library users.

She added that the intention was to close the library within the next few months and that discussions were underway with library staff to ensure they were successfully relocated.

"Once a decision is made it is hard for everyone, including the staff, so it is better to move on the decision swiftly," she said. "We are developing an action plan and would suggest the library will close within the next three months."
