Fears for future of coach company

A spokesman for Brown Coachworks, which specialises in manufacturing fire engines and coaches, confirmed to the Ulster Star that the company had gone into administration.

Browns Coachworks, which is family-run, has been in business for the past 150 years and includes the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, among their clients.

The firm, based on the Moira Road, went into administration on October 10, the spokesman revealed, sparking fears for the future of the company and its employees. Keenan Corporate Finance Ltd, based in Belfast, have been appointed joint administrators.

In 2009, the firm built a horse box for the Royal family member, who had previously visited their premises. At the time the workforce was said to be around 60 people.

Alderman Allan Ewart, chairman of Lisburn City Council’s Economic Development Committee, told the Star that he hoped the future of the manufacturer could be secured.

“I am sorry to hear the news that such a long-established and highly-regarded local business such as Browns Coachworks has gone into administration,” he said. “This company has been making a significant contribution to the local economy here in Lisburn for 150 years, supporting local jobs, and working for clients as diverse as the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade to the Princess Royal.

“I hope that a resolution can be found which will help safeguard the staff and the future of this skilled manufacturer.”
