PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd said additional resources would be used to catch law-breakers and help maintain road safety over the coming week.

He said: “Police make no excuse for robustly enforcing the law to make Northern Ireland’s roads safer.”

A total of 11 people have been killed on the roads so far this year - six fewer than during the same period last year.

“These statistics offer no comfort to the families, friends and communities across Northern Ireland who are mourning the loss of a loved one,” said Mr Todd.

“Considering that many, if not the majority of these deaths caused by collisions could have been avoided, it’s an appalling waste of life.”

The PSNI have also appealed for pedestrians and cyclists to exercise caution when using the roads.
